2. The Support Axis
Which Media and Processes Enable Mental Content to Form, Be Preserved, and Continue Developing?
The Support Axis runs through the entire operation of the Core Axis.
It consists of two interconnected pairs:
Multimodal Mental Representation ⇄ Language and Symbolic Expression
Memory ⇄ Learning
The first pair shows the media in which mental content and mental processes take form and operate.
The second shows how they are preserved, made accessible again, and used to develop the Mind OS over time.
Multimodal Mental Representation
A multimodal mental representation, or multimodal pattern, is the mind’s natural medium.
Here, a “representation” does not mean visual imagery alone.
A single internal pattern may include:
- visual imagery;
- sound;
- smell;
- taste;
- touch;
- space;
- rhythm;
- posture;
- the sense of movement;
- internal bodily sensations;
- emotional tone;
- motor commands;
- possible actions.
When a child recalls how to tie their shoes, they do not necessarily recall a sequence of sentences. What may become active is a multimodal pattern containing movements, directions, tactile sensations, and motor instructions.
When they imagine a story, the positions, voices, movements, and emotional states of the characters may combine with the setting to create an internal representation.
Learning therefore cannot always begin with ready-made concepts and rules.
The child needs opportunities to observe, experience, act out, move, arrange, draw, and organise learning content into internal patterns.
Language and Symbolic Expression
Language and symbolic expression are human-created cultural media.
They are not limited to spoken or written language.
Mental content may be carried through:
- words;
- writing;
- drawings;
- images;
- signs;
- gestures;
- pointing;
- diagrams;
- mathematical notation;
- music;
- dance;
- other culturally created systems of expression.
What they share is that they carry mental content and processes through systems created by human beings.
Multimodal mental representation is a natural medium.
Language and symbolic expression are culturally constructed media.
The mind constantly translates between them.
The child:
- turns an internal representation into a sentence;
- imagines a situation from a sentence;
- names a feeling;
- turns an instruction into a pattern of action;
- tells a story from a drawing;
- records movement through signs;
- forms a thought into a text or diagram.
Language is therefore more than communication.
It makes mental content tangible, orderable, communicable, and consciously manageable.
In this sense:
Language is one of the mind’s most important tools for working with thought, and one of thought’s most tangible handles. Once mental content takes form in language or symbolic expression, it becomes easier to follow, organise, check, and develop further.
Memory
Memory is not simply a storehouse.
It is not enough for something to happen once or briefly enter the child’s awareness. The resulting content and patterns of functioning must be preserved, made accessible later, and brought back into operation in an appropriate situation.
The four basic stages of memory are:
Encoding → Retention → Recall → Reapplication
The important question is therefore not only whether the child can repeat something at a particular moment.
We must also ask whether the child:
- can recall it later;
- recognises it in another context;
- can connect it to a new experience;
- can use it in a new situation.
Memory becomes a stable internal support when an earlier pattern is no longer an isolated success, but an accessible and usable form of functioning.
The depth of learning becomes visible not in momentary recall, but in how reliably knowledge can be mobilised and applied.
Learning
Learning is the developmental perspective of the Mind OS.
It does not merely mean that the child has acquired a new piece of information, has solved a task successfully once, or can repeat a rule.
Learning occurs when the child’s internal operating system undergoes lasting change: new connections are formed, new strategies become integrated, and earlier experiences make more effective functioning possible.
Development is therefore not only about what the child knows at a particular moment.
It is also about how the internal system from which knowledge, thinking, and action emerge is changing.
The child:
- perceives more accurately;
- recognises more relationships;
- recalls more reliably;
- expresses ideas with greater nuance;
- plans more consciously;
- begins tasks more independently;
- monitors and corrects their own actions more effectively.
Learning shows how functioning used in a specific task can develop into a more lasting, more general capability that remains available in new situations.
Memory preserves what has been formed and makes it accessible.
Learning transforms and continues to develop the operating system itself.
Learning is not a data upload. It is lasting change in the functioning of the Mind OS.
